I made book safes for everyone in California. The books I used are Pride and Prejudice, Swiss Family Robinson, Black Beauty, Heidi, and Ivanhoe. I've read all the books but Ivanhoe. I read excerpts from Ivanhoe while I was cutting out pages for the cubby and I think that I will probably not bother with Ivanhoe.
I am still trying to come up with a better technique that doesn't leave the inside edges so rough so I won't bother with a tutorial yet. I apologize for not having better photos. I shot these really quick before we left to go to California.
I will be sharing this at:
Great idea, Melissa...though I hope the librarians and bibliophiles don't come after you! LOL I'll be interested to see the process for creating this. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeletePS - Son#2 just chose Swiss Family Robinson for his 2nd quarter assigned Novel. I can't wait to dig into it with him. :o)
I love the books you chose! These will come out great! I've read in a magazine somewhere that they used the book scraps and decoupage to cover the rough edges. I've also read on a blog somewhere where she used mulberry paper to cover it up. Hope that helps a bit! Can't wait to see the finished project!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful - love how you finished with a picture page.
ReplyDeleteFun. I was thinking that this would make a nice gift for a child. Who wouldn't want a secret spot to store their childhood treasures?
ReplyDeleteHappy hugs for a wonderful week, sweet Melissa xxxx
ReplyDeleteThese are darling... although... I have to admit... I cringe just a little at the site of a book being re-purposed... kind of like breaking china for mosaics.... but that is just me. :)

I am anxious to find out if you come up with a way to smoothly cut the pages. I like this idea.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! That is a great gift for someone who has everything! What if you mod podged a layer of paper on the inside to bind the cut edges together and cover them up? Just an idea.
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome idea!!!! Can't wait to see the tutorial! Thanks so much for linking this up to gettin' crafty on hump day!!!!! :)
ReplyDeleteGreat idea ! I will have to give this a try. Hope you figure out the rough edges Ÿ
ReplyDeleteWhat a great thrifty gift idea, love the cute vintage books.. i'm still a little uneasy about the idea of cutting books! but this really appeals to me :)
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted a book safe! I think yours look great, and you chose good books to use! I've also never read Ivanhoe
