Pumpkin Patches and Wishbones

On Friday afternoon, the girls and I went to the pumpkin patch. Have you ever noticed that almost everyone calls the pumpkin patch they go to "The Pumpkin Patch", as if it were their personal pumpkin patch and as if out of all the pumpkin patches in the world it were the only one worth going to?

Our patch has Scottish Highland cattle. They are such fabulous looking creatures.

In the barn with this goat was an ancient white blind horse, a obese Vietnamese potbellied pig, more goats (fainting goats), llamas and alpaca.

They have all sorts of fowl from guinea fowl, to peacocks, to turkey, and geese. This year they even had some young chicks who were in that awkward half down-covered and and half feather-covered stage.

Escaping the corn maze.

Last week, I was looking through a book of science experiments and found the classic experiment of turning a bone to 'rubber' in vinegar. I happened to have two wishbones lying around (doesn't everyone?) and so we turned one to rubber and left one as a control,

I let the girls make a wish and break the brittle bone (above) but I didn't have the heart to show it because C grabbed K's wrist and held it steady and so cheated. :(

Here is the rubber bone - you can tell even in this photo that it doesn't seem to have the same shape as the control bone.

  5. You crack me up. You just happened to have two wishbones around. You are just like me but I do not keep wishbones. I am no science buff so I had no idea you can turn bones into rubber. That is so cool. You really do learn something new everyday. Great pictures (as always).

  10. Melissa-Your black and white photos are especially good! I love them. You are so right about "the" pumpkin patch. Looking over some of your past posts, I can see that you are intent on helping your girls discover the world around them! Also, I think your grandmother surrogate is a very wise lady and a mentor to you also. Thanks for dropping by. Take care of yourself!

  11. Hi Melissa!! Love the pumpkin patch pictures, in particular that wonderful pig!!!! Too funny. My In-Laws have a pig farm and my munchkin got to hose down the pigs the other day. Now there is a meditation exercise....the pigs will never truly stay clean and all your work will be for nothing. Just breathe and spray and let your mind be empty. :-)
