teddy bear, teddy bear

You become. It takes a long time. That's why it doesn't often happen to people who break easily or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes dropout and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand. Margery Williams

I got this teddy bear for my first birthday. I can't say for sure but I think he came from my parents. I don't recall that he ever had a name. I do recall feeding him real food. I know my Mom repaired him more than once.

Since he has only one arm, I imagine it is a blessing that toys don't really become real.

  1. On our wedding day my mother-in-law gave my husband a gift--he opened it and inside found "Bunny" his rag tag stuffed bunny from babyhood. It floats around the house and Issac has begun sleeping with it--it is much more ragged now. Poor bunny.

  2. I had a flat teddy bear similar to that. I don't have it anymore, I don't know what happened to him...

  5. It was so nice to see your comment on my blog...how have you been? So sorry to hear about your R.A. I have fibromyalgia, but keep it under control with diet and exercise.

That bear looks a lot like one we have around here...from my daughter's first birthday. Just can't seem to throw it away. Oh, the stories they could tell!

  6. Like Heather's husband, mine was a bunny rabbit, not a bear. I can't remember his name, but I have lots of pictures with the evidence. I wonder where he went.

He was from your parents. That was a 1 year old present for all you kids. All of the rest of your siblings bears disappeared along the way. I remember DCM's was a big yellow Pooh bear, but I do not remember AJM's or RAM's. They apparently did not have the character and the lasting ability that yours had. DCM's I think got chewed up to mangle state by a dog. It was truly gross and so it disappeared. Love NLM

Your cousin J truly believed The Velveteen Rabbit and was so disappointed when we had to tell him that his beloved Oscar would never come to life - even though he was sure he heard him bark! I still have Cocoa, my childhood dog, who is very threadbare but was much loved. He is nearly 54 years old.
