What is this thing? I thought at first it was a floral frog but now I am not sure - it could hold cigarettes? It is Norcrest Fine China 'Sweet Violets' 7/745. It is broken.
BTW I love floral frogs...pin, glass, and figurative!

I can't resist these books. These are the books I would check out of the library over and over when I was a child - probably the same editions or close too as they look and feel the same. I bought the red one titled "Hey! Horses!" yesterday.

My guess is that you are right, that it is some sort of fancy ashtray. One made so that it was easier to chain smoke. Interesting items! great job on the weight loss!

Lol, when I read '10 pounds down now' being English I immediately thought that your finds had cost you £10! Doh! I have no brain. You've lost a great deal of weight in a short time, well done!

All right--I do research for a antiques and decorative arts appraiser so have a huge list of resources for checking unusual shapes in china and pottery (it is amazing how many people collect them.:)) I believe you are right. There is a "cigarette holder" in the Sweet Violets" collection by Norcrest. I couldn't find a picture but the style and shape match the small ashtray in the same set. What I find interesting is how similar the cigarette holder shape is to lipstick holders of the same period. If the holes were wider I would say it was a lipstick holder and in fact I suspect that it was designed after the lipstick holders of the same style.
