a candle tray with loads of texture (rust, moss, jute!)
This candle tray was easy and fun. I simply wrapped old jars with various materials, jute twine, cotton twine, rope, fishing line, unwrapped raffia bow paper, and two different kinds of wire.
I set them all on this wonderfully grungy old enamel tray and surrounded them with moss.
Wrapping is easy. On some jars I wrapped nicely and neatly using hot glue to hold it in place. On some jars, the fishing line in particular, I just wrapped it around and around a little bit randomly.
Wire is hard to work with so I didn't bother with neat. I just got it well wrapped. Once it was wrapped I bent the lose end and slipped it behind the other wires.
To rust the wire, I placed the jars in old yogurt containers and poured vinegar over them and let them stand in the vinegar. You will need to change the vinegar periodically as well as vary the level of the vinegar and whether the jar is right side up or upside down.
Things won't rust without oxygen but you need the vinegar to breakdown the surface and start the process. The rusting process only takes 2-3 days.
I am sharing this at a bunch of wonderful blogs that post link parties. Link parties are a fun way to meet new friends and to get good ideas. Check these wonderful blogs out!!
