Looking for a Creative High Party #12

Mad Hatter! Well, then, Shall it be a bonnet or a boater? Or something for the boduoir? Cloche, dunce hat, death cap, coif, snood, barboosh, pugree, yarmulke, cockle-hat, porkpie, tam-o'-shanter, billycock, bicorn, tricorn, bandeau, bongrace, fan-tail, nightcap, garibaldi, fez.

My creative high this week definitely came from making hats. Here is my latest creation.

I might edit this post later today to give you a better idea of the brim. This hat is made for me but it gets old trying to get photos of oneself - so C is my every ready model. I used an old denim skirt I picked up at GW and a pair of jeans I got from the free bin at church. I used the jeans for the pocket and the brim. I wanted to use the waistband for the hat band but couldn't make it work.

I didn't line this hat because I wanted it to be extra floppy and I figured denim wears well - I zigzagged the raw edges inside the hat is all.

I think this will be my new go-to hat when I am doing errands in Mom-garb - because it will go with so many things.

K is wearing a hat I made earlier this week. I wore it to book club last night and one of the girls said it looks even better in person than it did in the photos.

PS Don't you love the lens flare in the above photo - it is a beautiful one imho.

Here is the update to show the brim of the hat.

Last Week's Creative Geniuses!!

I think that I've revealed to you all before that I am incapable of straight lines.  I love what Cecily from Craftopotomus did.

Her self-leveling frames are brilliant. At least then if the frames are not in a straight line they will all be the same amount of crooked (that is if I were to borrow her idea). :)

Sarah from Dolls and Daydreams shares how to make this wonderfully practical baby sling.

Doesn't she seem totally content in a sling with Daddy?

This weeks winner is Adrienne from Kitschalicious for her unique nightlight. I am totally in love with this and want to make one of my own!!

The Rules:
1. Link to your specific post, not the main page of your blog. Link to something you made that shows off your creative genius; something that gave you a creative high kind of like the endorphin rush that runners talk about. It can be an old post or a new post but it needs to be something you made.

2. Give your entry a descriptive title.

3. Use my button to link back to the party or add a text link in your post.

4. I can't accept links to etsy shops or online stores but I will accept parties and give-a-ways.

5. By entering your link, you are giving me permission to use any part of your post including pictures in a spotlight at Those Northern Skies (appropriate credit and links will be given to you and your blog of course).

The Prizes:

1. Every Friday at the next party, I will highlight my favorite posts from the previous week.

2. My favorite entrant of the week will win an advertisement in my sidebar free of charge for one month (four weeks). If you do not have a shop, I can put your blog button up or if you would rather I can put up a button for your favorite charity.

3. In addition, for those who make a project inspired by one of my projects or one of my tutorials, I will pick one winner a month and they will get to keep an advertisement in my sidebar for two months. Plus all inspired entrants will be part of a featured post at the end of the month.

my baby lost her first tooth and the tooth witch

hen my oldest started losing teeth I made her a pocket for donations for the tooth witch - here it is:

The sign says, "Could I have your tooth Sweetie? I need a few" and above the arrow it says Donations Accepted.

Yesterday K lost here first tooth so I figured I better make her one too:

Her sign says: "Honey, I'll paya for ya thuth!! I losth minth!" And at the bottom it says: Exchange Rate: Detached Tooth-$1.00, Attached Tooth-1 chest of jewels.

See the adorable gap? No?

Better?

Do you like her hairband? I bought it from All The Trend.

I love it.

hat mania

I am compulsively making hats. Here are three I made yesterday.

This one is disappointing. I messed it up more ways than I care to admit, which is particularly sad because while I got the fabric from the remnants bin - it was a very expensive bit of fabric. In addition, before I sewed the hat, I added beads and sequins to the decorative stitching.

This one is the same pattern as the one above. I love the color and the fabric (my husband doesn't like it at all). The only thing I would do differently is the lining. I made the lining out of the same fabric as the exterior because I wanted to see how it effected the body of the hat. I think I would do it with a light-weight lining next time!!

Um, I don't know what to tell you about the tongue. A dear friend of mine took these photos while I was at her placing doing laundry.

The fabric is from old ties. I want to make it again with a couple of modifications  so that the hat flops a bit more. The shape is too much like that of an onion dome.

As I mentioned earlier, a friend took these photos for me. For the past three weeks, I've been doing laundry at her place because my washing machine is broken (they are supposed to repair it tomorrow). To thank her for letting me do my laundry at her house I made her a pair of embroidered napkins. Here they are in all their un-ironed glory!!

the hat I made for me

The hat I made for myself!! Remember the zipper rose I made? It found itself a new home, I think it is perfect for this hat!!

Ooops, sorry about that!! The band is folded under a bit. Hubs isn't fond of taking pictures, so oh, well!!

You know, I wouldn't consider myself a particularly vain person but I have decided that soft-focus is definitely my friend. I am knocking the door on forty this year and next year will be the big 4-0 and I am realizing that my skin is pretty tough looking.

For those who might be interested the pattern is Newlook 6522 and the hat is view B. I think I am going to definitely make more hats. This was so easy and fun and if you wear hats as I do, you realize hats can be spendy (not as spendy as shoes perhaps - but still spendy).

can't wait to show you what I made for myself!!

I made two hats this weekend. I want my husband to take a picture of me in my favorite one. Here is a picture of my daughter in the first(trial) hat I made. It is a bit big on her but looks very cute on her - for some reason it doesn't work on me - but the other one....I can't wait to show you!!

Sorry about the weird expressions on C's face. The sun was too bright for her she said.  I gave her this hat and I am sure she will wear it - she is my hat girl.

Looking for a Creative High Party #10

Just...a...Little...Taller

I provided a high for my girls this week by making them stilts (I've only made one pair so far - need to use more pineapple juice before making the next pair).

Kid's are so funny. C walked up to me on the stilts and said "Mom, I am as tall as you!" From her head to mine she described a line that made about a forty-five degree rise!!

Party Highs from Last Week

Cecily from Craftopatamus made this adorable birdhouse with even more adorable birds. Someday I will learn to knit or crocet. :)

Michelle from Mich L. in L.A. made a birdie themed craft too. Her birdies were the athletic type and were converted into lacy earrings and necklaces!!

This week's winner is Laurie from Scene of the Grime who made this gold starfish to imitate a pricey one she saw on vacation. Her starfish cost a fraction of the price of the designer starfish.

no craft just pictures from last weekend

Last weekend we went to the annual summer picnic for the company where my husband works. His boss holds it at his cabin which is about two hours north of where we are.

It was a rumbly, grumbly day with lots of threats and a few sprinkles until the end when the threats were fulfilled.

This is the big guy: hubby's boss. I think he is a fascinating man and a wonderful Christian. I love his heart for God.

When we first started going to the company picnics everyone was young and in their early twenties and alcholic beverages were the drink of chioce.

Now there are a million kids, and we are all watching our weight, and drinking water!!

Every year at the end of the party, there is a big give away. The company buys gifts for all the children and then there is a huge drawing held for all the vendor gifts that are given to the company over the year. This year it started pouring right before the drawing so we piled into the garage. We made it through three rounds of drawings (which means everyone got to pick three things from the pile).

When we left it was sprinkling but about the time we made it to the highway it started pouring. Soon it was hailing. We drove through very high winds and at one point stopped under an ATM drive through at a bank for shelter.

It cleared just as we got home - for a glorious sunset.
